Agape Means Love

Agape means Love. Love for children, for families, for Christ. We engage with those we are blessed to serve by offering love and support through a variety of programs and services.

We are a faith-based nonprofit serving nearly 10,000 Memphis-area children and families annually to keep them safe, smart and successful through:
  • School-based initiatives and place-based services in under-resourced communities
  • Homeless services
  • Counseling
  • Adoption and foster care

To be a Christ-centered ministry that is dedicated to providing children and families with healthy homes.

Agape will serve children, families, and communities by sharing God’s love throughout the Mid-South. With excellence, we will connect people to God’s mission by uniting children with loving families, strengthening homes and communities with intentional relationships, and linking servants to service.

Two-Generation Focus

We fully serve both parents and children with holistic, wrap-around services including school-based initiatives, workforce development, early childhood services, community safety, and trauma-focused support. By supporting both parents and children through a poverty-reduction model, we aim to provide healing for the full family unit and their community so that permanency and sustainability are possible for all.

Our Philosophy

Agape is a Christ-centered ministry and as such, follows the teachings and example of Jesus Christ in all that we do. These beliefs serve as the foundation upon which this agency is built and shapes its programs and services. We seek to be a strong voice advocating for the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of children and families, and maintain a special commitment to serving under-served and/or disenfranchised populations and communities. Helping build healthy homes and families is what Agape is all about.

In keeping with these Christian principles and our focus on continuing the ministry of Jesus Christ, we seek to:

1. promote the spiritual growth and development of our clients, employees, and associates;

2. support the work of local churches in equipping their members for ministry and in serving and developing their communities; and

3. strengthen and empower families, churches, and communities so that children are provided with healthy homes and supportive family systems.

Our History

Since our founding in 1970, Agape has grown from a staff of 2 to 60+ team members and 2,000 volunteers. Those who have known us for decades know us as an organization whose roots include a longtime affiliation with The Church of Christ and a focus on foster care and adoption services. In the last 10-15 years, we have expanded our reach to provide support and services to Memphis-area children and families right where they live with the goal of providing healing before they ever have to enter into foster care. In fact, we currently serve nearly 10,000 children and families each year in an effort to keep them safe, smart, and successful through school-based initiatives and place-based services in under-resourced communities; counseling; homeless services; and adoption and foster care.

Please enjoy this message from Jerry and Carol Lee, whose personal experience with fostering children in the 1960’s led them and other members of The Church of Christ to found Agape nearly half a century ago.
